Kathak & Tap...Together As One!

Submitted by admin on

Helloooo! So I have a cold. I look, feel and smell like a person with a head cold. It is not very nice. Luckily though, today I was working for South Asian Arts from home, so I could stay in my robe, look like a zombie, and didn’t have to worry too much about how unsanitary the excess of used tissues was that I was surrounded by. While I stopped for lunch, I decided to waste a little time on YouTube, and I found a cool video of a kathak dancer and a tap dancer doing a duet of sorts. It was called Charlotte Moraga and Chloe Arnold in India Jazz Progressions. If you get a chance, watch it! The two dancers are performing to live musicians – traditional Indian music band to one side of the stage, jazz trio to the other.

The two dancers battle out beats, one with bells and one with tappers, and its amazing to see how the two styles are really quite compatible because of the essential rhythm both dancers create with their feet. Fusion pieces are great to watch; boundaries of different arts are pushed when combined with each other, as the two dancers did in their piece together. I highly recommend watching the two women’s video!
